How do I find my Sweet Spot CBD dosage?
How do I find my Sweet Spot CBD dosage?
When it comes to CBD and the dosage necessary to provide any sort of relief, there is no standard. Since CBD is new to the market and research has just touched the surface in regards to its benefits, we are left with recommendations from manufacturers, online sources and friends or family that have experience with it. In fact, the FDA has not released any RDI (recommended daily intake) regarding CBD. It is only just recently that the FDA announced the first CBD product to have the distinction of being GRAS - Generally Regarded as Safe to be Plus CBD Oil’s (link to Plus CBD product page) Gold Product line.
Every person is different when it comes to how we respond to various supplements. Your anatomy, diet, and tolerance are invariably unique and special. So we are on our own when it comes to finding the best CBD dosage which can be a daunting task when you have no source of information to glean from. I’m hoping that this article will provide you with a good foundation for finding the right dosage for you.
Finding the best CBD dosage requires a starting point and then adjusting along the way until you find a “sweet spot”. Your “sweet spot” will be the exact amount to take each day that provides you with the relief you’re looking for without any negative symptoms or side effects. So let’s get started and get you on the right path.
Create a starting point to finding the right dosage for you by looking at your body weight. It makes sense that the bigger you are the greater likelihood that you will require more than someone that is on the lighter side in order to feel the effects. Women who are generally smaller than men will on average require less. As often with many things, less is more. Start low and adjust accordingly based on desired results.
Before you start, write down on a piece of paper how you generally feel. Use a basic scale from 0-10. For example, what is your stress level? 0 would be you have no stress to a 10 which is the highest amount of stress you could possibly feel. Ask yourself a few questions specifically on what issue you’re trying to address like what level of anxiety do I feel, how much discomfort am I having, etc. Record your answers, so you can look back on it later and compare.
After you have recorded all of your baselines, you are going to need to know your body weight. A general guideline
Starting point = 1-2 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight
If you weight 100 pounds, then your starting point would be 10-20 mg of CBD. If you’re new to CBD or are sensitive to things in general, I would start at the lower end of 10 mg.
Continuing with the aforementioned starting recommendation, say you want to start with 10 mg of CBD. Now you need to find out how much it would take to get that 10 mg of CBD. Every product is different so check your product label and see how much it would take to achieve the 10 mg. Most products will let you know how much mg of CBD you are getting per serving on their package label.
But what if my product doesn’t specify exactly how much CBD per serving?
In this case, let me go over some basics so that you can accurately find out how much CBD you are getting with each serving.
First, take a look at how much TOTAL CBD is found in your bottle of CBD oil/tincture. This will usually range from 200 mg all the way up to 3000 mg. Go check your product label to find the total amount of CBD.
Next, find out the total volume or size of your bottle of CBD. Go grab your bottle and take a look at the label. Normally on the front, you will find the size of the bottle. This can be from 10 ml up to 120 ml.
Now, we’re going to do some basic division.
TOTAL CBD in bottle ÷ Volume of your bottle = Amount of CBD per ml
So, if your bottle contains 500 mg of CBD and it is a 30 ml bottle it would be
500 mg CBD ÷ 30 ml bottle = 16.67 CBD mg per ml
You might be thinking how do you get exactly one ml for my dosage? I would highly recommend that you get an eyedropper that is labeled exactly to 1 ml. This way you know the exact amount of oil you are getting. There is no guesswork involved. You can pick one up on here on buddii or just buy it off Amazon by searching marked dropper.
If you would rather not buy a separate dropper you can also approximate a ml of CBD oil.
One ml is ~20 drops.
This can cause some variance because not all droppers are made equal and some people are more heavy-handed than others but 20 drops is a good approximation.
Using the example above, there is 16.67 mg of CBD per ml in a 30 ml bottle with 500 mg of CBD. By doing a little more division we an find out how much mg of CBD you get per drop. Use the amount of CBD per ml number that you got above and divide by 20 drops. This will give you the amount of CBD per drop. The equation looks like this.
Amount of CBD per ml ÷ 20 drops = Amount of CBD per drop
Using the number of 16.67 mg of CBD that we got from Equation 1
16.67 mg CBD per ml ÷ 20 drops = 0.83 mg per drop
Starting point ÷ Amount of CBD per drop = Number of drops for Starting Point
If you have a starting point of 10 mg then divide 10 mg by 0.83 mg per drop.
10 mg starting point ÷ 0.83 mg per drop = 12.04 drops or 12 drops after rounding down.
It took a little bit of math but with these three equations now you know how to find exactly how to calculate how much you need to get to your starting CBD dosage.
Place the amount of CBD oil under your tongue that is required for you to get your starting point. You want to leave the CBD oil under your tongue for at least 60-90 seconds. There are lots of blood vessels under your tongue so by placing it under your tongue you are getting CBD into your bloodstream quickly and effectively.
**Tip: Dry underneath your tongue with a towel or cotton of some sort so you’re not adding oil to a pool of saliva that will prevent the oil from staying under the tongue.
After the 60-90 seconds, go ahead and swallow the CBD oil. It is important that you leave the oil under your tongue for as long as possible. Don’t just place the CBD oil in your mouth and swallow. The CBD oil will have to get digested which lengthens the time it takes to take effect. Also, swallowing outright will have the CBD oil go through something called first-pass effect. The first pass occurs when CBD goes to your liver from your digestive system and the liver breaks down the CBD. This greatly reduces the concentration and effect of the CBD before it reaches your bloodstream.
This is also the reason why ingesting capsules or gummy forms for CBD may not be as effective using a tincture or vaping your CBD. Vaping CBD also eliminates this first-pass effect.
Wait an hour for any noticeable effects or lack of symptoms. If you’re already feeling a good change then great, you’re all set. If you’re not feeling any change, then add one drop each hour until you start to notice a change. Record each added drop. Stop adding once you start to see a noticeable effect. Add up the total amount of drops you took to reach an ideal state. Don’t overdo it. Taking too much isn’t good and it can desensitize your body quicker and make it less effective over time. Use the minimal amount necessary to get the desired benefit.
After you know you the exact amount of drops you can multiply it by your initial finding of the amount of CBD per drop or serving to find your total CBD sweet spot. You can always keep that number in mind if you switch brands or products.
What happens if there is no change by the end of the day?
If by the end of the day there is still no change, then start the next day where you left off. So if you ended yesterday with 30 drops then start today with 30 drops and keep adding a drop every hour till you notice a difference. That is your personal dosage.
What if the starting dosage was too much?
In the case your starting dosage was too much, try half the amount the next day and see how you feel. If it’s still too much then take a quarter of the initial starting point. If half was ok but you want a little more than you can adjust like above and add a drop per hour till you hit your sweet spot. Any negative side effects is an indication that you may have taken too much. In those cases, just dial it back and start over.
We've also created a CBD dosage calculator for you to see how much CBD to take.
