CBD oil is not currently regulated by the FDA. This means there is no official recommended daily intake or prescribed dosage available as there would be for other medicinal products. We’ve created this guide just as a starting point to help you on your CBD journey, but we want to stress that we’re not physicians and cannot give you medical advice.
Factors to consider
It goes without saying that everybody is different. Your reaction to CBD can depend upon a variety of factors including your weight, metabolism, your tolerance to CBD and the type and severity of the condition you’re looking to treat. In addition to this you have to consider the concentration of CBD you’re taking and the method with which you’re taking it.
It can be a little overwhelming, but we’re here to help.
Dosage estimate based on body weight
The most commonly accepted method of measuring out a dose of CBD is by body weight.
Generally, most customers take 1 - 2 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. For example, if you weigh 175 pounds, your starting point may be around 17 - 35 mg of CBD. It’s always recommended that you start at the lower end of the range and gradually increase the dosage until you feel the effects you’re looking for. Make sure you carefully monitor and gauge your reaction to the amount of CBD you consume and remember to increase your dosage in gradual increments.
Next, you’ll need to understand how to properly measure the amount of CBD you will be consuming.
Tinctures (per drop)
Most CBD oil manufacturers will make it easy for you by indicating a serving size on their bottle label. For example, a label might give you the following information:
- Serving size: 0.5 ml (approximately 10 drops)
- Concentration per serving: 25 mg of CBD
The label lets you know that 10 drops equals roughly 25mg of CBD. This means that 1 drop is roughly equivalent to 2.5 mg.
Using the body weight formula above, it’s suggested that your starting dosage be 1 - 2 mg of CBD per 10 pounds of body weight. If you weighed 150 pounds, this means you’d be looking to consume around 15 - 30 mg of CBD. And If 1 drop of our hypothetical bottle contains 2.5 mg of CBD, you would take about 6 drops to consume 15 mg of CBD, or 12 drops to consume 30mg of CBD.
Tinctures (mg / ml)
Some manufacturers will label their bottles with the volume of the bottle (in ml or in oz.) and the amount of CBD it contains (in mg). You can use this information to calculate the amount of CBD that you want to consume.
For example, let’s say you buy a 30 ml bottle of CBD oil that contains 600 mg of CBD. To work out the dosage contained in 1 ml of CBD oil, you would use this formula:
600 mg ÷ 30 ml = 20 mg CBD per 1ml serving
Use a marked dropper to measure out exactly 1 ml of the oil to take 20 mg of CBD. Increase this accordingly until you reach the dosage you’re looking to take.
If you don’t have a marked dropper, you can measure out an approximate amount using the dropper that comes with your tincture bottle, but be mindful there will be a degree of variance as not all droppers will be identical. As a rough guide, 20 drops is approximately 1 ml.
If you’re a little uncomfortable with the idea of measuring out your CBD dosage by dropper, you could consider taking CBD capsules or gummies. These are a great starting point for beginners because - in addition to being quick, simple and convenient to consume - a bottle of CBD edibles will list the amount of CBD (in mg) contained in each gummy or capsule. This makes it incredibly easy for you to measure out a more precise dosage and know exactly how many mg of CBD you’ve consumed.
Vaping CBD in an electronic cigarette is another simple method of consuming CBD. The way you measure the CBD content of an e-liquid is very similar to the way you measure a CBD tincture.
To start, check the bottle. Most manufacturers will disclose the amount of CBD per ml and all that remains is for you to measure out the required dosage.
For example , let’s say a bottle has a label that reads “10 mg of CBD per ml”. If you’ve determined that you need to take 20 mg of CBD according to your body weight, you simply need to measure out 2 ml of e-liquid and fill your vape tank.
If the e juice bottle doesn’t disclose the amount of CBD in a serving size, you can still work it out using the ‘mg / ml’ method that is used for measuring CBD tinctures (above).
Keep in mind that to properly control your dosage, you should only fill a single tank with the required amount of CBD e-liquid once a day and vape that tank periodically throughout the day. If you’re a regular vaper and need to refill your tank more than once a day, make sure you do so with non-CBD vape liquid so you don’t accidentally double your dosage.
As you work to find the ideal CBD dosage for you, you might find it helpful to start a diary to help you monitor your moods, stress levels, aches or pains (depending on the condition you’re using CBD to treat). Keep a daily log that includes details such as:
- The amount of CBD you’re consuming (in mg)
- How you’re consuming the CBD
- What time you took the CBD
- Whether you took it before or after a meal
- How you felt before consuming the CBD (rate how you feel on a scale of 1 - 10)
- How you felt after consuming the CBD (rate how you feel on a scale of 1 - 10)
- How long it took for you to start feeling the effects of the CBD
Keeping a log will help you track and quantify how much relief a particular dosage of CBD gives you. You can use this to help you gradually adjust the dosage to meet your needs.
How long does it take for CBD oil to work?
There is no single answer to this question as it varies by person. Everybody is different, and your reaction to cannabidiols can be influenced by anything from your metabolism to your chosen dosing method to your weight.
It’s important to remember that when taking CBD there is no ‘high’, so it can be difficult to tell when the the CBD has kicked in. The effect is subtle rather than dramatic, so it’s easy to overlook at first. If your dosage is correct, generally you should start to feel the positive effects after approximately 30 minutes. Again, this varies by person and by delivery method – edibles will take the longest to absorb as they take time to digest, vaping CBD should give you faster results.
As you can see, there is no single recommended dosage of CBD oil for a particular condition. It is a complex and individual thing that varies widely by person, dosing method, and the condition you’re seeking treatment for. Remember, it is always better to start with a lower dosage and gradually increase from there until you find the relief and effect you’re looking for.
